Research Journal Al Basirah, recognized by HEC in Y category was started in June-2012. It is a peer reviewed journal and is published biannually by the Department of Islamic Studies of National University of Modern Languages (NUML) (Islamabad, Pakistan) under the patronage of the Rector of NUML. The aim of Al Ba?irah is to deliver a platform for academic researchers, teachers and students to share their knowledgeable efforts and circulate their results to promote researches in the field of Islamic Studies,through providing opportunities for print and online access to quality material for all those who are interested in the field of research in religious studies.

Al Basirah not only encourages authors to be creative, but also attempts to motivate and guide readers to be inquisitive, creative and critical in approach. Al Ba?irah does not bound, but disciplines the intellectual mind into an open and logically set frame for progression of deep thinking towards various fields of study relating to Islam. I am delighted to learn that the Research Journal al BasSirah (HEC recognized), a peer reviewed bi-annual academic journal serves as a forum for introduction and presentation for scrutiny of new research and the critique of existing research on Islamic studies. We are very happy to avail the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of research based knowledge through this publication. This Journal intends to publish the interdisciplinary high-quality research papers with originality of thoughts on Islamic perspectives. Al Basirah is an interdisciplinary biannual journal focused on religious studies that seek to publish arbitrated articles dealing with various aspects of life in relation to Islam.It covers various branches of knowledge such as the Uloom Al-Quran, Uloom Al-Hadith,Ilm-w-Usool-e-Fiqh, Comparative Religions,Ilm Al-Kalam,Sufiism,Philosophy, History, civilization,laws, politics,economics,culture,law,Arabic Literature and theology etc. Similarly, introduction and comments on Muslim Personalities and Islamic Books are also published in it. The Journal accepts articles in three Languages (Urdu, Arabic and English). Itseeks to establish a scholarly relationship between academic and intellectual communities of the world in the field of Islamic Studies.

The purpose and goal of the journal is to highlight different Islamic concepts, to answer different Islamic research questions and to find solutions to different issues arising in modern era in the light of Shariah.

History:

Dr. Syed Abdul Ghaffar Bukhari the founding Editor of Al Ba?irah, started working on the Journal in 2010, in collaboration with the NUML .In the beginning he worked hard for the publication of Al Ba?irah from NUML.He faced a lot of problems regarding the funding for it.After his great personal efforts HEC recognized Al Ba?irah in ‘Y’ category in January, 2015 in the editorship of Dr.Syed Abdul Ghaffar Bukhari.

Most importantly, it is the honor for this research journal (Al Ba?irah) that it has gained (1stPrize) in National Seerat Conferenceheld by the Ministry of Religious Affairs regarding research journals’ categorization, Islamabad. Now, the journal has fulfilled the requirements of HEC for the ‘X’ category and will apply for it in Dec, 2016 with the grace of Allah.

Scope:

Al Basirah is a print and an online research journal published by NUML with assistance of HEC. Its Mission is to appreciate brilliant scholarly research in Islamic thoughts. Guidlines For Author

General Instructions

Each paper must be like a research paper: it must have a conceptual/ theoretical framework; literature review encapsulating past research; data/ content collection and analysis; suggestions for future research and conclusion. The article must not have been published anywhere else. It should be in accordance with the research principles and should be on a new topic. Moreover, the article should be adorned with the references of basic sources. It is necessary to abide by the rules of writing and spelling.

Draft Format

The authors are required to follow the following instructions for formatting their papers, failing which the paper will not be accepted for publication. • Article should be composed on one side of A4 paper. • It should not be more than 25 pages. • Be careful regarding font size. a) For main-headings, font size: 18, b) For sub-heading, font size: 16 c) For matter, font size: (urdu,Arabic-14,English-12) d) Footnote: font size (Urdu, Arabic-12, English-10) • Line Spacing: single throughout the paper. • Page Numbering: On the top left corner of the paper with the title on the top right corner. • Page setup: envelope B5,Portrait • Margins: 0.9 inch margin on left and right side, 0.8 on top and bottom of each page. • Paragraph Indention: Indent each paragraph First Line by 0.5 inches and apply the indention consistently throughout the paper.

Directions for Writing:

Title, Abstract and Keywords

Title should be comprehensive, precise and reflect the original theme of the article. Abstract should contain summary of the research. Author would enclose an abstract containing approximately 250 words. It should provide a concise summary of the objectives, methodology (including the species studied), key results, and major conclusions of the study. It should be written in complete sentences, without subheadings. It must be written in English language. A list of 4 to 6 keywords may also be provided after the abstract.

Introduction

Introduction about the article must include objective, methodology, distinctive characteristics and short primer of the Research work.

Discussion

In this part of the article, author would present his views and research in detail.

Conclusion/Findings/Recommendations

Conclusion should be presented in a logical sequence. Findings of the research should be clearly mentioned on which recommendations are made accordingly.

Information about the Author

Author(s)’ name should be placed on the title page of the final paper right after title on the left corner and institution’s name along with further details should be placed in the footnote specified with the symbol(*). Please indicate the corresponding author in case the paper has multiple authors as well as one article cannot be written by more than two authors. A separate page containing the full name of Author(s), Email Address, affiliated Institute, Postal address and phone number(s) should also be submitted along with the article.

References and Bibliography

References should be made according to the following guidelines:

• References should be made as Footnotes.

• While giving references, Chicago Manual Style should be adopted.

• While referring to a book, author’s name, name of the book, publisher’s name & place and year of publication and then Volume No/Page No should be clearly mentioned.

Following example should be followed:

Ibn Kathir, Tafsir Al-Quran Al-Azim, Dar al-Sadir, Bayrut, 1354 A.H., 2/312

• For similar references at multiple locations, traditional style of abbreviations may be used.

• Quranic verses in the article be presented in Arabic script.

Method would be as under:

Sura Nisa: 4/184

• All Ahadith should be briefly interpreted.

Example for this is as under:

Al-Bukhari, Al-Jami’ Al-Saheh, Kitab al-Ilm, Bab Ifsha al-salam min al-Islam, Darussalam, Riya?, 1414A.H, Hadith no: 29, 1/8

• All-known figures mentioned in the article must be briefly introduced and references from books should also be quoted.

Transliteration of Arabic, Urdu and English words

For Urdu and Arabic words in English articles, Transliteration must be followed.

Citation from the Internet/webpage

If the author wants to cite an internet link then he/she is required to provide complete URL address failing which the reference will be considered invalid.

Language

Article may be written in Urdu, English or Arabic languages. It is necessary to avoid errors and omissions.

Ethics Policy

Approval of an article to be published in Al-Ba?irah will be subject to the following conditions:

• Article must not contribute to hate literature, extremism, sectarianism and anti-state views.

• Author is agreed on the content of the article and on its submission to the journal.

• The article, partially or completely, has not been published before, in any language.

• An article submitted to Al-Ba?irah for publication must not be submitted to another journal during the review process.

• If a draft submitted to Al-Ba?irah includes figures, tables or long text block that have been published before, the author is responsible for obtaining permission from

the copyright owners. All copyrighted elements should be specified appropriately in the draft submitted to Al-Ba?irah.

Transmission of Required Information

It is obligatory for the authors to describe their research in detail along with the significance of their research. Enough details of the citation should be provided so

that others will be able to revisit the research. Incorrect and ambiguous statements will be troublesome and are not acceptable.

Access to Data Sources

Authors can be asked to show the sources which are used in the article during the review process hence he/she is bound to provide access to the sources. Moreover, it is also recommended for the authors to withhold the sources and data for a short period after the publication.

Originality

It is responsibility of the authors to prove the originality of their research by ensuring that ideas are not stolen, citation is original and proper, no rephrasing is made from someone other’s thought and the results and conclusion drawn are obtained from the original research of the author. The work presented for publication must be related to author’s original research. Any kind of plagiarism is unethical and is not acceptable.

Simultaneous/Multiple Publication

Author should avoid submission of the article in more than one journal for review and publication at a time as it is unethical. Moreover, multiple publications on the same research are also not acceptable.

If an author wants to publish their work in multiple stages in multiple different articles, then references of the first publication should be represented accurately in the second publication.

Defining Sources

Written permission of the source is compulsory if any information is used and quoted which is derived from a discourse, correspondence or a talk of a third party. Sources must be defined and cited in an accurate manner in the article.

Major Mistakes in Published Work

If any mistake or error is noticed by the authors after submission of the article for review, it is obligatory for the author to inform the Al-Ba?irah focal person immediately, so that necessary correction in the article may be made well in time and in case of major mistake, article may be withdrawn. Author is also bound to withdraw or make necessary correction well in time as directed by editor or publisher and also provide the evidence confirming the accuracy of the original research wherever required.

Authors of the Work

Any individual with significant contribution in the research work which is being presented in the article can be included as author(s) of the article. However, it is responsibility of the primary author to ensure that all the co-authors have seen the final draft of the article and agreed for submission of the article.

Plagiarism Policy:

Al Basirah believes in quality research and consequently, there is no room for plagiarism. Plagiarism is considered a breach of Journalistic ethics and is an intellectual crime. Al Basirah never tolerates for plagiarism. It has very clear policies regarding this. Distortion of facts, copying or stealing of others’ creative work, duplicating and reproducing author’s own already published work, are all considered as undesirable and adverse practices. Therefore, the plagiarism of all received manuscripts is checked through software before sending them for blind peer review.

Authors caught plagiarizing face disciplinary measures. Al Ba?irah will take strict actions regarding this as following:

• A plagiarism committee is to be coped for investigation .Clear terms of reference will be provided to the plagiarism standing committee for their investigation.

• Under investigation an opportunity to the author will be provided to justify the originality of their concepts and research work.

• Plagiarism standing committee shall conduct the investigation and submit its report with clear cut findings and recommendations to the editor journal with in a specific

period not exceeding 60 days.

• The Vice Chancellor/Rector/Head of Department will have the discretion to implement the recommendations after approval through the statutory process and take punitive actions against the offender as per penalties prescribed under the HEC policy or to forward the report to HEC for further actions.

Article Publication Policy

Language

Al-Basirah publishes articles in Arabic, Urdu and English languages. The articles written in language other than English in particular should contain a comprehensive abstract in English.

Publication

In principle, articles are published after necessary reviews, revisions and approval in respect to their submission order, however in some exceptional cases where the research is extraordinary and worthwhile; the order can be changed with the decision of editorial board for which the authors are informed accordingly.

Letter of Acceptance

letter of acceptance can be issued by the publisher to the author after positive reviews from all the reviewers.

Open Access Policy

Al-Basirah has a policy of open access. All published articles and reviews can be accessed from the address www. al-basirah.edu.pk

Journal Copies

An electronic copy of the article will be sent to the corresponding author of the article. Moreover, a hardcopy of Al-Ba?irah will also be sent to each of the authors free of cost.

Review Policy

To ensure the excellent quality of Al-Basirah, the publication of the article in Al-Ba?irah is subject to a complete, thorough, comprehensive and confidential review.

This review is made by independent and competent religious scholars who give their recommendations on the article being presented for publication after review. Selection of Reviewers.

A careful selection of national and international reviewers is made keeping in view their area of research. To get an unbiased review, the names of reviewers are kept confidential. All works submitted for publication are reviewed objectively without regard to authors’ race, gender, religious view, ethnicity, citizenship, political tendency, age and reputation.

Declaration of opinion by Editor/Reviewers

Reviewers of Al-Basirah provide an explanatory short paragraph(s) on their opinions as proof of objectivity in the review process. Al-Ba?irah expects free declaration of opinion from authors, editor and reviewers. Hence reviewers are expected to avoid any arrangements that might potentially influence their recommendations or decision of agreement or disagreement.

Selection of Reviewers and Their Responsibilities

Those reviewers are selected for Al-Ba?irah who have strong grip on the subject area of research having objectivity and excellence in their evaluation and reviews.

All reviewers are well informed from the expectations of Al-Ba?irah. They are all required to fill out a review form and prepare a separate report whereever necessary.

Reviewing process is expected to be academic, honest, courteous, precise and constructive. The basic characteristics of a high quality review are the following:

• The reviewers should outline weak and strong aspects of the work in respect to its organization and methodology and also comment on each of these.

• The reviewers should express their opinions on the work concerning whether it has unethical content or whether it is below the standard for acceptance.

• The reviewers should give helpful suggestions for the improvement of the research work.

• The reviewers should have constructive and professional critiques addressed to the authors.

• The reviewers should provide a fair perspective to have a decision of acceptance (or revision).

• The reviewers are expected to identify the works that do not include citations or have not cited usage of other works and specify which parts are reproduced by the author

without citation. The reviewers should also state the outstanding similarities between the work submitted to Al-Ba?irah and any other study published in another journal.

• The reviewers should not contact with the author directly.

• If a referee is not able to review a work or complete the review with some delay, he/she should inform Al-Ba?irah.

• If the reviewers suspect a violation, they can inform the editor about this easily. But they should not share the issue with others unless they receive a directive concerning this.

Review Process

All manuscripts submitted are sent for a 'double blind' peer-review process in order to produce quality researches. Referees do not know the name of the authors whose papers they review. Peer reviewers are asked to give their opinion about significant issues relating to the originality and quality of article and to judge papers.

Al Ba?irah follows a three-tier review process. In the first tier each paper is run on the anti-plagiarism software and reviewed for relevance by the coordinators of the editorial committee. In the second stage, if article is found to be relevant and plagiarism-free the paper is sent to three reviewers- two international and one national. Suggestions by the reviewers are strictly implemented by sending the papers back to the authors. In the third and the final stage the editorial team analyzes whether the recommended changes (where applicable) have been incorporated or not and decision about acceptance of the paper is made. Only papers of highest research quality are accepted for the publication.

Confidentiality

The information and opinions given by the reviewers during the review process are all kept confidential and are never used for the advantage of someone. The submission of an article, as a special presentation, is kept confidential completely. Before the publication of an article, the reviewers and editor cannot utilize the data, ideas or subjects without permission of the author.
