Welcome to the Department of Translation and Interpretation

Translation is a complex and fundamental human activity involving transfer of meaning between languages, cultures and forms of expression. Many of the texts we encounter in our everyday life, are inter-lingual translations. Every act of communication, even within one and the same language, can also be viewed as a kind of translation because it involves encoding, transferring, and decoding messages.

Translatology or Translation Studies, as such, is an important aspect of Applied Linguistics. In view of its international dimensions and ever increasing usage in global trade, inter-faith harmony and inter-cultural understanding, leading universities of the world have acknowledged it as a distinct discipline and instituted separate departments of Translation Studies. Many need-based specializations such as business, scientific, official, academic, literary, legal, medical and media translations have been introduced at the BS and MS levels of education through these departments.

Expressions in any language are infinite. Translation as such, may have its limits as well as variability. The variability of translation reflects limitless flexibility of human minds. Issues and hazards in translations can only be minimized by acumen and professionalism. Bad translation by a non- professional can be awkward, embarrassing or even disastrous for the interacting societies, institutions or individuals. Professional translation in a given circumference, can provide in-depth knowledge even beyond original text.

Translatology is a skill which can be learnt and refined with multi-disciplinary approach. At the outset, it requires command over one pair of languages at least, if not two or more than two pairs of languages. Translation Studies, as a discipline, has encompassed many social sciences, basic sciences and technical trades to broaden its scope in the field of language, literature and culture. Inter-lingual communication, in written and oral mode, supplements teaching and conducting research alike in all the disciplines.

These programs offer the candidate, the opportunity to explore the main issues in the discipline of Translation Studies as well as to learn the necessary skills needed in translation and interpretation using the latest technology. "It is a known phenomenon that in the history of mankind, translation and conversion of existing knowledge into native languages, paved the way to development, dominance and culmination of many civilizations.
Pakistan is a multilingual country. Pakistani culture is seen as unity in diversity. Pakistani languages and dialects are also varied and they belong to more than one linguistic family. Pakistan, therefore, earnestly needs multilingual translators and translations to strength centripetal forces in order to promote national integration, cohesion and harmony. Other Pakistani languages, paired with Urdu as a link language for the purpose of translation, are more than useful for localization management as well. ." Read More
