Dr. Muhammad Riaz Shad, the Jean Monnet Chair, is Associate Professor in International Relations at National University of Modern Languages (NUML) where he has been teaching since 2006. He has been performing various academic and administrative responsibilities. He has worked as Head of Department and Coordinator for PhD & M.Phil programmes at the Department of International Relations. Since 2019, he has been editor of the Journal of Research in Social Sciences (JRSS). In addition, he contributes as a member of several academic committees in the university.
He accomplished PhD studies at the University of Bucharest, Romania under Cultural Exchange Scholarship programme. His doctoral research focuses on European Union-Pakistan relations in post-9/11 period. Precisely, his thesis examines the role of interests and norms in EU’s relations with Pakistan drawing on the theoretical perspective of Discursive Institutionalism. On account of specialization in EU studies, he offers courses on Politics of the European Union to graduate level classes. Further, he extends guidance and supervision to M.Phil and PhD scholars in research related to the European Union. He has published numerous articles pertaining to the politics and external relations of the European Union. In recognition of his academic achievements in EU studies and in order to further strengthen his teaching and research in this area, Dr. Shad has been awarded Jean Monnet Chair in The European Union as an Actor in South Asia by the European Commission for the period 2020-2023.
Beyond the European Union, Dr. Shad teaches Research Methodology, Theories of International Relations and International Politics of Middle East to post-graduate classes. His scholarly work focuses on the politics and international relations of the European Union, non-traditional security with special reference to cyber security and human security, and Pakistan affairs. As part of the Jean Monnet Chair project, Dr. Shad is pursuing publication of research papers on the topics about EU’s policy and practice in the context of contemporary political, economic and security dynamics at regional and global levels. Further, he is working on a book with focus on European Union’s role in South Asia.
