Department of Urdu

Welcome to Department of Urdu

The Department of Urdu Language & Literature was established at NUML (formerly NIML) in November 1976. Initially, its courses were designed exclusively for foreign students and included Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma programs in Urdu. In 1996, the Department was affiliated with Quaid-i-Azam University, after which M.A. Urdu classes were introduced for both Pakistani and international students. Following the grant of university status to NUML, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in Urdu were launched in January 2001. In addition, B.A. (Urdu) and BAML four-year degree programs were introduced, along with the M.A. Urdu (External) program in 2003 and the B.A. (External) program in 2015. In June 2002, the first issue of the Urdu research journal Daryaft was published, and since then the journal has continued its scholarly publication regularly. Another research journal, Takhliqui Adab, was launched in March 2004. Both journals were included in the approved journals list of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan. In February 2016, HEC merged the two annual journals into a single biannual journal, Daryaft, which was subsequently upgraded to the “Y” category. The journal is available on the university website and is indexed in several prestigious national and international databases and indexing services, including DOAJ, Crossref, EBSCO, ISSN, and the Index of Urdu Journals.

We are actively contributing to Urdu language and literature education in Pakistan while striving to further enhance our teaching and research standards and establish NUML as an outstanding model of a “University of Languages” in the region. The Department comprises 22 teaching and research faculty members. We offer a number of academic programs, including the newly introduced Bachelor of Science (BS Urdu) program in Urdu Studies. On the research front, the faculty continues its efforts to strengthen research in Urdu language, literature, and applied linguistics. In addition, the Department is devoted to promoting quality academic research in the fields of language and literature. Through the establishment of faculty-level research initiatives, the Department works in coordination with university-level research bodies to develop research teams and strengthen academic publications, with the aim of advancing Pakistan’s national language through high-quality scholarly research. The Department also publishes an Urdu research journal, Daryaft, which was established in 2002. The journal has been included in the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan approved journal list since 2005. Over the years, Daryaft has earned recognition for its academic quality and scholarly contribution to Urdu language and literature research.
