Jean Monnet Chair, NUML held a Guest Talk on the challenges and prospects of Pakistan’s GSP+ status in the European Union. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Riaz Shad examined the historical background and the political economy of the GSP+ scheme of the European Union. He underlined that the GSP+ scheme is part of the EU’s development policy towards the developing countries that have vulnerable economic conditions. The invited speaker, Ms. Naghmana Hashmi, former ambassador of Pakistan to the European Union, shared her personal experience of negotiating Pakistan’s case for the GSP+ status. Further, she argued that the EU does not intend to impose the conditionalities on the beneficiary countries. Rather, the EU’s approach is based on encouraging transformation of these countries towards democratization of political systems and stabilization of economic performance and growth.
