Jean Monnet Chair held a parallel session as part of International Conference organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences, National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Islamabad.
Session of the Chair focused on the nature and scope of the European Union as a polity. Enunciating the concept of regional integration, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Riaz Shad, Jean Monnet Chair
at NUML, explained the foundations of the European integration phenomenon in terms of goals, mechanism, nature, institutionalism, normative power and civilian power. Mr. Saeed Khalid,
former ambassador of Pakistan to the European Union, discussed the importance and mechanisms of ethics and normative principles such as human rights, democracy and rule of law in EU’s
external relations. Mr. Tariq Niaz and Mr. Raza Ali Khan, PhD scholars at the Department of IR-NUML, deliberated about the hurdles in regional cooperation in South Asia and lessons from
the European integration to address impediments on the way of the South Asian regional integration. Dr. Farhan Hanif Siddiqui, Associate Professor at School of Politics and International
Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, performed as the Session Chair. Ms. Pashmina Mughal, Assistant Professor at Department of IR-NUML, moderated the proceedings of the session.
